However, this only applies to cars that were first registered before 1981, which means that cars from the 1980s and 1990s will still be chargeable.

Young classic car enthusiast Stephen Hearse-Morgan pushed for the tax exemption rules to be changed and the limit reduced to 30 years.

The petition has received over 10,000 signatures and support from many within the automotive industry.

However, the government blew up the valiant effort by confirming that there were “no plans” to change the rules.
