Scorching Rods & Basic Automobiles Meetup – or “I am a lonely little onion in a petunia patch”

Tess attended a meeting with classic cars and hot rods this morning. I was a little cautious about how she would be received, but I know the organizers and they assured me that she would be welcome. In a field of muscle cars, Harley-Davidson bikes, and hot rods, she stood out like an onion in a flower bed.

After a slow start, we piqued some interest, and then it was two hours of non-stop questioning and the dissolution of the decade-old FUD around BEVs that explained the differences between a HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) and a BEV (100% Battery Electric Vehicle). . That included telling people over and over how long it took to charge from an electrical outlet, a target charger, and a high-speed charger.

The minimal electricity costs from now to 13 ¢ per kWh off-peak and the lack of a maintenance plan impressed the cost-conscious. One woman confided out of earshot how upset she was with her husband for spending so much money fixing his classic Ford.

Lots of people accepted my offer to take a seat in the vehicle and I enjoyed showing them the infotainment system and toy box. The fart mode was a huge hit as always. I had to explain that they couldn’t play Atari games, watch Netflix, or sing along to karaoke while driving. Yet.

It was a great morning, great conversations. I was allowed to visit with the types of cars I have owned in the past. A GM Holden Kingswood, a Ford Falcon. I even explained to the organizer how to handle his generator, which had eaten itself due to the lack of oil. I hope my advice worked – I’ll ask him next month when I attend the next meeting.
