Tesla will open a worldwide charging community for different electrical automobiles later this 12 months – TechCrunch

Tesla will give other electric vehicles access to its global network of chargers later this year, CEO Elon Musk tweeted on Tuesday. The comment follows years of chatter from Musk signaling that the company was amenable to the idea.

So far, there have been no details on how or when the company would open its SuperCharger network with 25,000 chargers. Details are still slim. For example, it is unclear where it would first open, which automakers have agreements with Tesla, and whether Tesla owners would be given priority. However, Musk eventually added some sort of schedule by stating that this would start before the end of 2021.

He later added in another tweet that his network would eventually be open to other electric vehicles in every country where it has chargers. Tesla SuperChargers are located in North America, Asia, and Europe, as well as the Middle East, United Arab Emirates, and Israel.

We developed our own plug because back then there was no standard and Tesla only made long-range electric cars.

It’s a pretty slim connector for low and high power charging.

Musk has been talking about either sharing the technology behind its Tesla Superchargers or opening it up to other electric vehicles for years. Back in 2014, Musk said he was ready to open the designs to develop a standard that could be used interchangeably across the industry. This could be used to charge competing electric car models on the Supercharger network.

Since then, he has mentioned a few versions of it at various events and during phone calls. In 2018, in response to a question during a phone conversation, Musk said that the Supercharger network was not a walled garden, a cue to suggest that it is not intended to prevent the use of other electric vehicles. It should be noted, however, that Superchargers are not compatible with other electric vehicles.

“We have always said that this is us – this is not supposed to be a walled garden, and we are happy to support other automakers and let them use our supercharger stations,” Musk said in 2018. “They just have to share the cost proportional to their vehicle usage pay. And they would have to be able to accept our charging tariff or at least – and our connection, at least have an adapter for our connection. So we’re very open to that, but none of the other car manufacturers have wanted that so far. But it’s like not because of the resistance from us. This is not a walled garden. “

The two common connections for fast charging are Combined Charging System (CCS) or CHAdeMO. CCS, a DC power connector that is an open international standard and has gained popularity in Europe and North America in recent years.

Tesla has its own connector, which means automakers must provide or sell an adapter to owners of their electric vehicles in order to access the SuperCharger network. It’s a different story in Europe. Tesla uses the CCS DC connection in Europe, which is the most likely region for Tesla to tap first.
