Do you remember that weird Will Smith movie about robots?
Yeah, neither do we. But Elon Musk does. Tesla is developing a 5’8 ”Tesla Bot, a prototype is expected next year. The news comes from Tesla during the first day of AI, which was streamed on the company’s website Thursday night.
The bot is proposed as a non-automotive use case for robots for the company’s work on neural networks and its advanced supercomputer Dojo.
“Basically, if you think about what we’re doing with cars, Tesla is arguably the largest robotics company in the world because our cars are like semi-sensitive robots on wheels,” said Musk. “With the full self-driving computer, [ … ] that will continue to evolve, and dojo and all the neural networks that recognize the world and understand how to navigate the world, it makes sense to put this in a humanoid form. “
The bot is meant to be “friendly and navigate a human-built world,” he added. He also said that they are developing it so that people can flee from it and easily get overwhelmed by it. It will weigh 125 pounds and have a walking speed of 5 miles per hour, and its face will be a screen displaying vital information.
Interestingly, Musk envisions this replacing much of the human drudgery that currently occupies so many people’s lives – not just work, but things like grocery shopping and other everyday chores. He raved about a future where physical labor would be a choice, with all the repercussions it could mean on the economy.
“In the long term, I think there has to be a universal basic income,” said Musk. “But not now because the robot is not working.”
Finally, Musk invited engineers to join our team and help us set it up.
